Courthouse Overview

Stanley Mosk Courthouse is the Civic Center's main courthouse for civil, family, and probate calendars — already referenced as a related courthouse on our Central Arraignment and Twin Towers pages for the matters that run alongside a criminal case. It is the largest courthouse in the Los Angeles Superior Court system and the seat of the Presiding Judge and the court's Executive Office.

One address question worth clearing up before anyone drives over, because it trips people up constantly: this courthouse is listed at both 111 North Hill Street and 110 North Grand Avenue. Those are not two buildings. Mosk occupies the entire block bounded by Hill Street, First Street, Grand Avenue, and Temple Street, and it has an entrance on each of those two streets. The Superior Court's own judicial and family law directories publish 111 N. Hill Street, so that is the address we use; the Judicial Council's state facilities records for the same structure use 110 N. Grand Avenue.

What matters for a bail case is what Mosk does not handle. Adult criminal arraignments from downtown bookings go to Central Arraignment Courthouse on Bauchet Street, and serious felony trials go to Clara Shortridge Foltz. Mosk becomes relevant when a criminal case has a civil, family, or probate matter running next to it — a restraining order, a custody dispute, a conservatorship, a civil suit arising from the same events.

The building itself is a piece of the 1947 Civic Center Master Plan: 736,200 square feet across a west wing and an east wing, roughly 100 courtrooms, opened in 1958 by Chief Justice Earl Warren and renamed in 2002 for Stanley Mosk, the longest-serving justice on the California Supreme Court. Something close to 7,800 people pass through its metal detectors on an average court day.

What We Have Not Confirmed

  • Address: both 111 N. Hill St and 110 N. Grand Ave appear in official records. They are the same building's two street frontages. We publish 111 N. Hill St because that is what the Superior Court's own directories use.
  • Opening time: county records disagree (7:30 AM vs 8:30 AM) and the court's own hours notice lists Mosk as an exception without a legible replacement time. The 4:30 PM close is consistent.
  • Official court parking rates were not confirmed from a court-published source this research pass.

Opening time is the one detail we will not state flatly. County listings for this building show both a 7:30 AM and an 8:30 AM start, and the court's own system-wide notice names Mosk as an exception to the standard 8:00 AM opening without publishing the replacement hour in the text we could verify. Call the courthouse or call us before making an early trip.

2

The 4:30 PM closing is consistent across every source. Bail, by contrast, does not run on courthouse hours at all — bonds are accepted at the holding facility around the clock.

3

Because Mosk handles civil, family, and probate rather than criminal arraignment, a defendant in custody is almost never physically at this courthouse.

Parking & Directions

Stanley Mosk Courthouse is at 111 N. Hill St, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Plan the trip around the courthouse itself — the jail holding the defendant is usually somewhere else entirely.

Getting There

The courthouse fills the block between Hill Street and Grand Avenue, along the north edge of Grand Park, with First Street and Temple Street as the cross streets. Enter from either the Hill Street or the Grand Avenue side — both lead into the same building.

Transit

Civic Center/Grand Park station sits directly at the courthouse, served by Metro's B and D subway lines. For a downtown court date this is usually faster and cheaper than driving.

Parking

There is no free court lot here. Paid public garages and lots ring the Civic Center on Hill Street and Broadway. We did not find an official court-published rate sheet, so treat any specific dollar figure as an estimate and budget for downtown pricing.

Security Screening

All visitors pass through metal detectors and are subject to search at the court's discretion. With roughly 7,800 people entering daily, the morning line is genuinely long — arrive well before a calendar call.

Departments & Case Types

The calendars actually heard at Stanley Mosk Courthouse, and where a bail decision fits into each one.

1

Civil Calendars

The Central District's main civil courthouse — unlimited and limited civil matters across both wings.

2

Family Law

Family law matters for the Central District, including cases routed here from branch courthouses such as Hollywood.

3

Probate

Probate, conservatorship, and guardianship calendars, with their own records counter and phone line.

4

Restraining Orders

Civil and domestic violence restraining order matters that frequently run parallel to a criminal case at another courthouse.

5

Presiding Judge & Executive Office

The administrative center of the Los Angeles Superior Court system.

6

Not Heard Here

Adult criminal arraignments and felony trials. Those go to Central Arraignment Courthouse and Clara Shortridge Foltz respectively.

How To Post Bail At Stanley Mosk Courthouse

The starting bail figure comes from the Los Angeles Superior Court’s felony and misdemeanor bail schedule, adopted under Penal Code §1269b, and review or reduction of that figure runs under Penal Code §1270.1.

Bail moves in two stages. At booking, the county schedule applies administratively — no judge involved, postable immediately. At the first court appearance, a judicial officer reviews that figure and can leave it, raise it, reduce it, or grant own-recognizance release.

Posting before that hearing isn’t a gamble. If the court later reduces bail, the premium is already earned — but the defendant spent the intervening days at home rather than in custody. If bail is increased instead, having posted early is exactly why they weren’t in custody for the hearing.

The bond itself is posted at the facility physically holding the defendant, not at a courthouse counter. We handle that. What we need to start: a full legal name, a date of birth, and a short cosigner conversation.

Every bond is issued by a California Department of Insurance-licensed agent under Cal. Ins. Code §1800, at the statutory 10% premium — as low as 1% down on approved credit.

If A Court Date Here Is Missed

A missed appearance at Stanley Mosk Courthouse can mean a forfeited bond and a bench warrant the same day, with a limited statutory window to bring the defendant back before forfeiture becomes a judgment against the cosigner.

Bail FAQs

The questions families actually ask when a court date is set at Stanley Mosk Courthouse.

Is Stanley Mosk at 111 N. Hill Street or 110 N. Grand Avenue?

Both — it is one building with two street frontages, filling the block between Hill Street and Grand Avenue along Grand Park. The Superior Court's own directories publish 111 N. Hill Street, so that is the address to use. State facilities records for the identical structure use 110 N. Grand Avenue.

Are criminal arraignments heard at Stanley Mosk?

No. Adult criminal arraignments from downtown bookings are heard at Central Arraignment Courthouse, 429 Bauchet Street, and serious felony matters at Clara Shortridge Foltz, 210 W. Temple Street. Mosk is civil, family, and probate.

Why would a bail case involve Stanley Mosk at all?

Because criminal cases frequently have a civil, family, or probate matter attached — a restraining order, a custody dispute, a conservatorship. Those calendars are heard here even when the criminal case sits at another courthouse.

Do I post the bond at the courthouse?

No. A bond is posted at the facility physically holding the defendant, which for a downtown booking usually means the Inmate Reception Center or Twin Towers on Bauchet Street. No courthouse counter takes the bond.

Can a bond be posted at night or on a weekend?

Yes. Court hours end at 4:30 PM on weekdays; the jail's bond window never closes. Bail set at the county schedule amount can be posted at 3 AM on a Sunday.

Is there free parking at Stanley Mosk?

No. This is the Civic Center — parking is paid, in garages and lots along Hill Street and Broadway. The Civic Center/Grand Park subway station is at the courthouse door and is usually the easier option.

How big is this courthouse?

736,200 square feet across two wings, roughly 100 courtrooms, and close to 7,800 people entering on an average court day. It is the largest courthouse in the Los Angeles Superior Court system.
