Each of the Sheriff's Department's 13 contract cities has its own Police Services command, with its own captain serving as that city's Chief of Police Services, its own staffing, and in most cases its own front-desk line. Above them sit three patrol divisions — North, Southeast, and Southwest — which is the only level the Sheriff's location directory publishes addresses for.

That matters for a family trying to find someone. Driving to a city hall expecting a jail, or to a station whose address was never published, costs hours. Nobody stays at a patrol station anyway: booking for every Sheriff's arrest in the county runs through the Intake Release Center at 550 N. Flower Street in Santa Ana, and the bond gets filed at the facility the person is classified to afterward.
