Four Facilities Connected Underground
Fresno County's custody system is concentrated in downtown Fresno — three of the four facilities are physically connected by underground tunnels for safe inmate transport, so a housing move between them never looks like a transfer out of the county.
The county recently closed one older facility — the South Annex Jail, open since 1947 — and replaced it with a new one, the West Annex Jail, in December 2024. If you've heard the name "South Annex," it's no longer the current answer. Many directories, and even the Sheriff's own general jail-information page, still describe the system as three jails including South Annex.
One more thing worth saying plainly: FCI Mendota, about 36 miles west of Fresno, is a federal prison run by the Federal Bureau of Prisons — not a Fresno County jail. Bail bonds do not work there the way they do at a county facility, and the two are frequently confused because of the shared place name.

Main Jail
1225 M Street, Fresno, CA 93721
Built in 1989 and the anchor of the downtown complex — one of three Fresno County facilities physically connected by underground tunnels used to move people in custody between buildings.

Built in 1993, directly beside Main Jail and connected to it by the same tunnel system. Functionally part of one downtown custody complex rather than a separate destination across town.

Opened in December 2024, replacing the South Annex Jail that had operated since 1947. This is the current facility — many secondary directories, and even parts of the Sheriff's own site, still name South Annex instead.

A separate 200-bed minimum-security facility about two miles south of the downtown core, holding people accused of misdemeanors who have not posted bail and people serving short sentences.
