West Annex Jail opened in December 2024 at 2208 Merced Street, replacing the county's South Annex Jail — a facility that had been in operation since 1947 — as part of a real, recent modernization of Fresno County's custody system.
The South Annex Jail, at 2280 Fresno Street since 1947, permanently closed on December 14, 2024 and was replaced by the West Annex Jail at 2208 Merced Street. Numerous secondary sources — including some updated well into 2025 and 2026 — still describe South Annex as active, and the Sheriff's own general jail-information page still summarizes the system as three jails including South Annex. West Annex is the current answer.
Do not confuse the county jail system with FCI Mendota. That is a real federal prison in Mendota operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons — it is not a Fresno County Sheriff's facility, it does not take county bookings, and a county bail bond has no effect there.
Three of Fresno County's four jail facilities — Main Jail, North Annex, and West Annex — are physically connected by underground tunnels, so a person can move between buildings without ever appearing to leave the complex. A locator result naming a different building than you were told usually reflects an internal move, not a transfer out of the county.

Fourteen of Fresno County's fifteen cities run their own police departments, so most arrests begin with a city department's own processing. San Joaquin is the county's one true Sheriff contract city, and the Sheriff patrols all unincorporated areas directly.
Transfer into county custody
Anyone not cited and released is transferred into the Sheriff's Office jail system in downtown Fresno. This transfer step is why an early county custody search can come back empty even though an arrest definitely happened.
